Project Details
System Size: 1,000 kW
Location: Montego Bay, Jamaica
Commissioned: 2024
Fuel: Natural Gas

Located in Montego Bay, this landmark resort—formerly known as Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa and now rebranded under Dreams Resorts & Spas following its acquisition by Tortuga Resorts—has undergone a multi-phase energy transformation shaped by successive ownership transitions, including its original development under Playa Hotels & Resorts.
The project was initially conceived as a 1.0 MW microturbine-based combined cooling, heat, and power (CCHP) system, integrated with an existing absorption chiller. In this configuration, exhaust heat from two of the five microturbine modules was used to produce chilled water, while the chiller’s internal burner generated hot water for the resort’s domestic needs.
Following the relocation of the energy plant and the identification of future expansion opportunities, E-Finity reengineered the system to significantly enhance its performance and efficiency.
The upgraded design incorporates a larger exhaust gas-fired absorption chiller capable of producing up to 450 tons of chilled water, substantially increasing the cooling capacity available to the resort. In addition, a dedicated hot water heat exchanger was introduced to recover thermal energy from the chiller’s exhaust stream, enabling the production of domestic hot water without relying on the chiller’s internal gas-fired burner.
By capturing and repurposing this otherwise unused thermal energy, the system generates additional savings through the displacement of fuel previously consumed for hot water production. The solution is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fuel that is readily available in Jamaica and well-suited for high-efficiency, low-emissions distributed generation applications.
The result is a fully optimized CCHP system that delivers electricity, chilled water, and hot water from a single integrated platform—improving operational efficiency, reducing energy costs, and supporting the resort’s long-term sustainability goals.
This project highlights E-Finity’s ability to adapt and enhance complex energy systems in evolving ownership environments, unlocking incremental value through advanced engineering and strategic system integration.
