Reliability of power generation in the US Virgin Islands is highly sought after but critical for one of the main food suppliers in St Croix, USVI. To eliminate dependency on grid supply, Plaza Extra East implemented a microgrid that combines various technologies to produce an efficient and reliable power system. E-Finity provided a 1.0 MW microturbine system that complements 750 kW of solar and a 625 kWh battery energy storage unit to offer the reliability and independence that their operation required to be able to guarantee there would be food available to sell to their customers under any environmental conditions. The microgrid is their main power source, while the utility was kept as backup. The E-Finity proprietary mTIM Control system allows us to remotely monitor and even troubleshoot the system 24/7. The resiliency of the system was tested under the severe conditions that hurricane Maria posed on the island. This microgrid solution has reduced Plaza Extra’s energy costs in half and has cut down emissions by more than 50%.
