The Department of the Interior manages public lands and minerals, national parks, and wildlife refuges, upholds Federal trust responsibilities to Indian tribes and Native Alaskans, and is responsible for endangered species conservation and other environmental conservation efforts. In their efforts towards improved environmental conservation and as part of an Energy Service Performance Contract to upgrade the building’s chilled water system, the Department of the Interior installed a C800 and C200 microturbine in 2017. The C800 and C200 were installed instead of C1000 because of space constraints in the building but having Capstone’s scalability allows the C200 and C800 to parallel each other providing 1 MW of power. The exhaust of the microturbines is used to provide 315 tons of chilled water through an exhaust driven absorption chiller to supplement the building’s large cooling load.
